Could this be the latest must-have for hard-working professionals in the City of London? A sleeping pod where they can take a quick nap.
Podtime, a London-based company, offers rooms a room with six enclosed capsules – fitted with a mattress, pillow and lockable door.
Jon Gray got the idea for his start-up when he was working in finance. He says, “The hours that people do there in high-stress situations, you realize that it would be nice if there was somewhere where you could get away for a sort of short period of time to recharge your batteries, have some space to think. And the benefits of doing that kind of thing are quite well documented, your productivity, energy levels, stress levels.”
With a background in engineering, Jon made these pods himself. He says he’s had a lot of interest from major banks that want to install the capsules in-house. So he’s also looking to start producing the pods.
So would these City workers like to take a siesta? One passer-by said, “A bit difficult to get out of the office for even half an hour, let alone a quick hour to put your head down. Somewhat difficult. Depends how flexible your working hours are, I suppose.”
Another said, “I know I’m productive, more productive if I have an hour-and-a-half lie-down and work till six, seven at night, so I’d have no problem with that, no.”
The pods are designed for use by only one person at a time. Getting 40 winks costs about $10 for 30 minutes and about $16 for an hour. And Podtime also provides earplugs – in case a snoozing neighbor snores.
Bottom line: A former finance worker in the City of London has set up Podtime, a company that provides sleeping pods where hard-working professionals can have a siesta.
