Don’t we already have the adage “Sell in May and go away” (and get back in in November)?

Great question. The seven-year cycle is one of the market forces that drives the “Sell in May and Go Away” mindset every fall. The difference between a sabbatical year and non-sabbatical year is the level of volatility and large negative deviation from average market returns.
