620 Million Without Power in India
A power grid failure in India left 300 million people without power yesterday – roughly the population of the United States. Today, that number has jumped to 620 million.
The reason for the outage? Too much demand on a weak grid.
As India’s Power Grid Corporation says, “There was overdrawing of power as the demand peaked. As a result, two to three grids tripped simultaneously.”
The country recently reduced infrastructure spending thanks to the economic slump. But with this many people without power – including some hospitals – perhaps it’s time to invest in smart-grid technology.
