First it was apples. Then it was red grapes. Then dark chocolate.
Now, researchers in Mexico have discovered a new health-boosting food to add to the list: avocado.
We already knew that avocados were good for you in terms of fighting cholesterol. But researchers at the University of Michoacan have found that oil from avocados is far more powerful than previously thought.
That’s because it contains antioxidants known to protect our bodies from free radicals, or mitochondria that have been damaged and turned against the rest of the cell.
Meaning that “in the case of illnesses in which the mitochondria is damaged, avocado oil could help organs withstand or be more resistant to oxidative stresses,” according to one biologist from the university. This includes diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
Scientists were able to prove that avocado oil can help protect cell walls in yeast from high concentrations of free radicals. And they’re hopeful that it can work in human cells, too.
So maybe the next time you’re feeling a bit stressed and worrying about your blood pressure, if counting to 10 doesn’t work, try chilling out with some guacamole instead.
