Diabetes Smartphone Monitor Makes its Debut
Diabetics and doctors are hailing the iBGStar – a new glucose monitor that can be synced with the iPhone. The device allows diabetics to conveniently manage their condition, while also alerting their doctor and concerned relatives when their blood sugar levels get too high.
The device’s needle pricks the skin to draw a small amount of blood. The iPhone software then analyzes the sample and shows the results on the screen. The process is simple enough to be accessible to a wide range of diabetics, says Dr. Andrew Hockey, Diabetes Medical Director at Sanofi:
“Anybody can use this blood glucose meter. It simply plugs into an iPhone and if you can use a modern phone, you can use this meter. You don’t have to be technically savvy. You can use this from age 16 through to 86.”
Although currently only available in Europe, developers soon hope to bring the device to diabetics worldwide.
